From David

Hi to one and all !
We are now 24 hours away from the start and after our 2 day training hike now very aware as to what lies ahead over the next 3 and a bit weeks. I think deep down we have all been taken somewhat by surprise at just how harsh this place can be. The last 2 nights of -40 degree plus (or should that be minus) temperatures have been brutal.

Saturday was our 11th wedding anniversary and to say that I miss Kate and the kids is an understatement, I can only imagine what a great time you are having back at Point Lonsdale. I hope PT is not missing his old wetsuit too much, but be rest assured that it has been put to good use as a goggle mask and a sunglasses protector.

Today is Big John's birthday and Iain and my self managed to smuggle in a bottle of bubbles to celebbrate, which we will do tonight. Hopefully they will also have the effect of lowering the sonic boom like snoring that we are all suffering from and of at the moment.

I can also only reiterate John's comments around family support and say that without the love and understanding of our families we would not be able to undertake this most amazing adventure.

  1. Hi Dave and friends. You are truly amazing and I wish you smooth Pole-ing. Keep up the snoring--it creates warmth. I send you love and deep respect for what you're undertaking and look forward to your good result. Jen Hamilton, Melbourne, Australia.

  2. Hi Dave and fellow snorers! I thought I managed to send you a blog yesterday but have just ended up being listed as a follower. I don't get this blogging business as bascically I am behind the times with all this electronic communication. Hang in there as we know you can do it. Really can not even begin to imagine the conditions - the cold- and that sense of white as far as the eye can see. What about the 'smell'? I know when I return 'home' to the Solomons and step off the plane, take a deep breath and smell that frangipanni and be engulfed by the thick wet air....different feeling/sensation altogether at your end of the earth! Keep a diary listing even the most trivial of thoughts so you can share all about the trip on your return (teacher speaking!). All thinking of you as you depart on this wonderfully challanging adventure and sending our love from down town Melbourne and beach side at Point Lonsdale, Australia. CB

  3. Dave,
My blog is on my Dashboard so heaven knows how you will access it.
Hope your expertise in that wilderness is better than mine in cyber space.

Hope you are well rugged up. Sounds like its a little colder than sitting on the verandah at the Richmond Hilton eating a Silvio's.
Great effort on the fundraising so far to you and the team. Will be catching up with the Spivey-Chick and gang on Saturday which will be fun. Now that we are logged onto your blog, will endeavour to keep tracking. Can even send you an update on whats happening in the financial mkts as I assume you are missing them ...not!

Hope all is going well and the body is keeping up to the task.

    cheers

  5. Hi Dave
Is it a six or seven iron to the pole?
Would expect the cold air to take a few yards off the ball to be honest, best choke down on a five to be sure....orange ball I assume.
I hear you are ripping it up, keep it going, backside of a polar bear scores extra.
Look forward to hearing all about it.
    Best
    Ben
